Trey Gowdy Comes Out Swinging Against Benghazi Critics

Gowdy Silents Critics: “We’ve Broken New Ground”

Trey Gowdy and his select committee on Benghazi seemed to have been thrown under the bus by House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, when McCarthy had this to say about the investigation:

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?” McCarthy, who was lined up to be the next speaker, said on Fox News. “But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she’s untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened had we not fought.”

Whether or not McCarthy should have been given the benefit of doubt that he didn’t mean to imply the Benghazi investigation was purely a partisan witch-hunt is besides the point. In American politics, one is never given the benefit of the doubt: Hillary Clinton seized on his comments with this national TV ad, and McCarthy dropped his bid to be Speaker of the House largely due to his loose-lipped comments.

Yet, though McCarthy may now be sunk, Trey Gowdy is coming out swinging in defense of his investigation of what occurred in Benghazi on the night of September 11, 2012. Though Democrats made mince meat of McCarthy, they will find Gowdy to be a much more formidable foe.

Gowdy himself writes in USATODAY:

“Our committee has also accessed new documents from the White House, CIA, Defense Department and Justice Department. Our committee does not trot out or trumpet every piece of new information uncovered or release selective portions of witness interviews, because credible investigations pursue facts, not headlines.

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is more than a rote phrase. It should be the guiding principle of a serious investigation. Perhaps our critics could live without the 41 new witnesses, seven eyewitnesses, 50,000 new documents and emails from the secretary of State and Ambassador Stevens. We could not. We will keep working until the last fact is uncovered.”
