The Second Amendment is a Tool, Not a Reason to Cower

Joshua Feuerstein, a former pastor and self-described “American evangelist, internet and social media personality,” took to the internet on July 9 to go on a tirade about the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling and efforts to make Christian bakers serve same-sex couples.

This author wrote just last week in support of the First Amendment freedom to (dis)associate and discriminate. No matter how unpopular a person’s opinions, he or she has the right to express them and should not be fined or punished with legal force for going so. No, a Christian baker (or any person) should not be forced to serve a same-sex couple (or anybody) against his or her will.

However, Feuerstein’s argument in this aggressive video is mostly nonsensical, and he seemingly forgets that murder is a sin.

Feuerstein ended a recent video rant posted to his Facebook page by holding up a semiautomatic assault rifle and encouraging his followers to fight for their “First Amendment right to refuse” recognition of marriage equality with their Second Amendment right.

This blowhard, the Donald Trump of (ex)pastors, stops just short of threatening the LGBT community. Frankly, it was scary.

Feuerstein yells menacingly into the camera, pulling out his assault rifle:

Why are we backing down to the government and not drawing a line in the sand? They’re coming after our First Amendment constitutional rights! Well, check this out, this is one pastor that will not bow. Why? Because my First Amendment right is guaranteed by my Second Amendment right. Think about that, ladies and gentlemen.

What is more, the hype surrounding this video comes just after rainbow pride flag targets used at Oklahoma Run n’ Gun, a shooting competition, earned national coverage (and, rightfully, anger). The following photo was posted on the Run n’ Gun’s Facebook, with the caption “new high visibility targets on the 500 yard range.”

While the organizers of the event removed the photo and claimed it was a joke, not a threat, it is likely that many who saw the post on Facebook and shot at the targets did not see it as such.

What Feuerstein and those who seek to intimidate the LGBT community need to remember is that the gays have guns too. Members of the LGBT community are not victims. Libertarians often joke that we want to see gay married couples defending their marijuana plants with guns bought using Bitcoin…

Well, here is a call to arms for the LGBT community (and a call to show Feuerstein some love on social media, maybe with a video of your own). The Second Amendment belongs to all of us!
