Gary Johnson may not have been the perfect pick of a nominee for the Libertarian Party. Many libertarians share the opinion that Johnson is potentially is one of the least libertarian LP nominees ever. He commonly espouses views that are considered as more left-leaning. Such an example would be the incident where he became belligerent with a reporter for using the term “illegal immigrants” rather than “undocumented immigrants.” This is something which could have been handled much better, and much more intelligently.
Johnson is by no means the best, nor the perfect candidate possible for the LP. However, no candidate can be objectively perfect due to the nature of individual viewpoints. The Republicans and Democrats have put themselves in a bind about voting for the lesser of two evils. The same can be said about the Libertarian Party and Green Party as well, but instead of being the lesser of two evils, it’s the lesser of four evils.
Gary Johnson may not be the “perfect” liberty candidate, but in terms of the four current candidates for president, he is by far the most liberty-friendly candidate in the race. So to the libertarian who doesn’t want to vote for Johnson because he or she doesn’t agree with everything he says, he’s the current best option.
People familiar with the libertarian movement know that there are different factions of libertarians all united under one banner. Even though the Classical Liberals, Minarchists, and AnCaps may not have the same end goal in mind, we still work together to advance the cause of liberty. Libertarians shouldn’t be bickering amongst ourselves, letting missed opportunities go by the wayside. We should be going full in on the nose-dive and push our agenda of liberty together.
There could be a future in which the factions of libertarians might come to an impasse and go our separate ways, but until that day comes we should stand together. If you are libertarian, and you don’t agree with Johnson on everything, I would hope that you steel feel a need of duty to your fellow freedom fighters to advance the cause of liberty. Vote for Gary Johnson when the time comes. Vote in good conscience knowing that you did something to help further the fight for freedom. Don’t let your feelings cloud your judgement.
