EPA, biofuel industry criticize study

A large, government-funded study published in Nature Climate Change has both the government and the biofuel industry up in arms. The study alleges that corn-based biofuels actually release 7 percent more greenhouse gases than conventional gasoline.

The research contradicts the Obama Administration’s characterization of corn biofuel as a cleaner alternative to gasoline.

Its claims highlight the potential of government-based environmental solutions to backfire.

The EPA has dismissed the results of the study, saying that the research “does not provide useful information relevant to the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from corn stover ethanol.” Yet last year, an Associated Press investigation “found that the EPA’s analysis of corn-based ethanol failed to predict the environmental consequences accurately.”

David Tilman, a biofuels researcher at the University of Minnesota, disputes the EPA’s characterization, calling the study the best he has seen on the subject so far.
