SHOCKER: Trump Beating Cruz in Texas…

Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump is beating Senator Ted Cruz of Texas… in his own home state.

Governor Rick Perry is also being bested by the New York businessman, but that’s not surprising considering that the former Texas gov has been lagging at the bottom of polls for weeks now.

Donald Trump is polling at 24% in Texas, on par for his national average, and Cruz comes in second at 16%. Perry is only coming in at 4% alongside Mike Huckabee and Scott Walker.

The Cruz campaign openly acknowledges that the support for Trump is likely coming at the expense of the anti-establishment Cruz. Trump’s bellicose rhetoric and fiery words on illegal immigration have placed him in the limelight, with Cruz being forced to catch up. Cruz’s strategy at the moment appears to be that of a bicyclist drifting behind the lead, waiting for a chance to overtake the frontrunner if they make a mistake.

Cruz has gone out of his way, not only to not attack Trump, but to defend him from his fellow contenders, saying: “I would … note that an awful lot of Republicans, including other Republican candidates, have gone out of their way to smack Donald Trump with a stick. Now I think that’s just foolish,” he said.

When asked by Politico why he defended Trump, he replied: “Donald Trump had a rally in Phoenix, Ariz. [to which] between 10 and 20 thousand people came out. When you attack and vilify the people at that rally as crazies, it does nothing to help Republicans win in 2016. I’d like every single person at that rally to show up and vote in 2016, knock on doors with energy and passion, and turn this country around. If Washington politicians show contempt and condescension to those [voters,] that is a path to losing at the ballot box.”

The Texas primary will be on March 1st, along with 9 other states.
