Several Protesters Die in Venezuela As Anti-Government Protests Continue

Several Venezuela protesters have died as anti-government protests continued, NPR reported.

NPR reports:

“Protests are mounting against embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and the death toll is mounting too. As demonstrators braved a tropical storm on the streets of Caracas on Thursday, a 36-year-old died elsewhere of wounds he had sustained in other protests days earlier.

Opposition lawmaker Alfonso Marquina announced Gruseny Antonio Calderon’s death on Twitter, calling him “another victim of the dictatorship.”

Calderon is the fifth protester to die of injuries sustained in clashes with police since the latest round of protests kicked off roughly two weeks ago. According to authorities, others include a 13-year-old boy and two college-age students.”

A protester, sixty-four year old Alfonso Lopez Porras, spoke with the Miami Herald where had harsh words for the socialist regime.

“Those of us who are on our way out of this world have much to protest,” he told the Herald. “There’s no bread or medicine. In every corner of Venezuela, this socialist project has failed.”

The protesters are calling for new elections and the removal of judges judged to be too friendly with the ruling Socialist Party. President Maduro’s presidency was called “a dictatorship” after the Venezuelan National Assembly was dissolved by the Supreme Court. Maduro called it a “historic ruling” before urging the Supreme Court to reverse its decision, which it later did.

The protests are expected to continue despite it being Holy Week, which the Maduro government tried to take advantage of by offering “people additional vacation days this year, partly in an attempt to encourage a lull in demonstrations” reported NPR.

With elections indefinitely postponed and scarcity of necessary items such as bread, it is hard to see these protests not continuing.
