An unidentified student at Hercules High School in California who alleged that he was beaten and sexually assaulted by three classmates recanted after detectives began to poke holes in his story.

Investigators pressed the student for more information when they failed to find wounds on the student’s body or forensic evidence in the bathroom where the assault allegedly took place. The student then admitted he made the whole thing up.

Inventing such a serious attack is itself a serious offense. Yet school board president Charles Ramsey has said that the district must stand by the student. “Sometimes a young person uses poor judgment, but we have to be compassionate and understand what motivated the student to want to do this,” Ramsey said.

“Everybody is human and we all make mistakes. It doesn’t take away from the fact that we need more support for transgender students.” The student is biologically female but identifies as male.

The allegations caused a community-wide outrage when they first surfaced. The Bay Area News group reported that “Parents, students and teachers were reeling Tuesday in the wake of a violent attack on a transgender student at Hercules,” and that the allegations had shone a “negative spotlight” on the high school.

Tiffany Woods, of the Tri-City Health Center in Fremont, implied that conservatives were to blame for what allegedly happened to the student. “I know Contra Costa from the fact that I went to high school there. Contra Costa is just a much more conservative district. I can’t imagine this kid has a whole lot of support out there.”

Police had been pursuing the case as a hate crime.
