In 2008, Sarah Palin made a now-famous prediction: the Russia would invade Ukraine if Obama were elected president.

“After the Russian army invaded the nation of Georgia,” said Palin, “Senator Obama’s reaction was one of indecision and moral equivalence. The kind of response that would only encourage Russia’s Putin to invade Ukraine next.” In a Facebook post on Friday, Palin mocked Foreign Policy magazine for calling her prediction “an extremely far-fetched scenario” at the time.

During an interview with Sean Hannity on Monday, Palin again criticized Obama as weak, saying “the perception of him and his potency across the world is one of such weakness.”

Palin contrasted Obama with Putin, who she says is a more imposing figure. “People are looking at Putin as one who wrestles bears and drills for oil. They look at our president as one who wears mom jeans and equivocates and bloviates,” said the former governor. “We are not exercising that peace through strength that only can be brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue.”

Although the interview was focused on the conflict in Ukraine, Palin’s goal may have been to use ridicule in order to pressure Obama into supporting pipeline development. The interview could also signal a relapse in Palin’s foreign policy outlook. In recent years, Palin has appeared to move away from interventionism. At least year’s Road to Majority conference, Palin mocked the notion that the U.S. should intervene in Syria. “We’re taking on more new interventions?” she asked. “I say let Allah sort it out.”

It warrants mentioning that, while 2008 Palin demonstrated keen foresight on Ukraine, she also called for incorporating former Soviet nations into NATO – a position that could have entangled the US in the conflict.

“Indecision and moral equivalence” likely meant a failure to babysit the world at the expense of American tax dollars and lives.
