Rare AC-130 Gunship Footage From Vietnam Emerges [VIDEO]

Ahh, the AC-130. The terror of the skies. The original gangster of attack airplanes. Originally designed as a cargo plane, the C (for cargo) was kept in the name since it still does deliveries… of munitions, mostly. It made its first appearance in the skies over Vietnam in 1967, and has been in continuous service since then.

It’s a non-pressurized aircraft, which means it needs to fly relatively low while performing a pylon turn, a large circle around the target giving it the change to fire for far longer than a conventional attack plane.

The original AC-130 held 4 7.63 GAU-2/A miniguns, and 4 20mm M61 Vulcan 6-barrel Gatling cannons. Other variants added 40mm cannons, and modern versions fire 105 mm howitzers alongside the 40 mm Bofors cannons and 20mm M61 Vulcan cannons. Those are big guns.

The footage reportedly came from an Air Force serial newsreel called “Air Force Now,” and shows some of the first recorded incidents of engagements using the gunship to engage targets in Vietnam. It’s believed the footage is from 1972, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Here’s some bonus footage of the AC-130 in modern combat.
