MUST-WATCH: Ron Paul Interviews Rand Paul, Talks Foreign Policy

Rand Paul Also Highlights New Allies Gained in Debates

By: Elias J. Atienza

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) appeared on Ron Paul‘s Liberty Report to discuss a variety of subjects. Most of the discussion focused on America’s foreign policy with the Middle East, mostly in regards to Arab Spring and arms sales.

Ron Paul noted that it took Senator Paul a relatively short time to make it on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. It only took Senator Paul two years to be appointed to the committee. Foreign Policy described Paul as a “thorn in the State Department’s side” due to his holding up on several of their nominees.

Senator Paul described the time where he held up a water bill in order to gain a debate on the authorization of military force against ISIS. He ended up getting a hearing and a debate and ended up voting against both the Republican and Democratic proposals for dealing with ISIS.

He points out that the Republican proposal would have allowed the United States to go to war anywhere if there were even a “vague link” with ISIS. The Democratic proposal would have Congress renew the AUMF every three years but did not set geographic limits. Rand Paul points out that there are more than thirty terrorist groups across the world that have pledged allegiance to ISIS.

“I think that is to much power given to the presidency,” Rand Paul said.

Senator Paul also continued his criticism of selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Paul was able to force a vote on the sale of F-16s to Pakistan through the Arms Export Control Act of 1976. Though he notes that he lost his vote on Pakistan, he said that they won “the battle” on U.S. taxpayers subsidizing these arms deals.

Paul also highlights the allies he has gained in fighting these fights, especially among Democrats. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) have been an allies of Paul on issues such as Saudi Arabian arm sales. He also gained the support of Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), the Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, on selling weapons to Pakistan.

“Chris Murphy has been taking the lead and he’s been more interested in Saudi Arabia,” Paul said.

Senator Paul also noted that Turkey and U.S-backed Syrian rebels are now fighting the Kurds in Northern Syria. Just last week, the Pentagon called on Turkey and the Syrian Kurds to stop fighting.

Paul also called for an audit of the Fed and the Pentagon.
