R. Kelly is facing up to six months in jail for falling behind on child support payments. In the past, Kelly has had to auction off one of his homes to pay off millions in overdue taxes.

The singer, who has three children, is required to pay $20,833 a month in child support. This is, needless to say, several times the average cost of raising three children.

The heavy burden placed on Kelly is common among celebrity songwriters. Courts regularly penalize wealthy divorced men by requiring them to make payments dramatically higher than the actual cost raising a child. Charlie Sheen is required to pay $55,000 a month for the support of his twin sons. Casino mogul Kirk Kerkorian was ordered to pay more than $10 million in child support for one daughter.

Last month, Texas father Clifford Hall was sentenced to jail after paying the child support he owed. At roughly the same time, Kansas sperm donor William Marotta was ordered to pay child support. After Marotta donated his sperm to a lesbian couple, he signed a contract waiving his parental rights. That didn’t stop one of the women from contacting the government for financial help – or a judge from ordering Marotta to provide it.
