Images appearing to show the upcoming design for the highly anticipated iPhone 8 seem to reveal that the new device will have a fingerprint sensor.
Located on the backside, right under the Apple insignia, the touch technology would presumably be used for locking and unlocking the smartphone. The pictures were first unearthed by 9to5Mac, a blog almost purely focused on Apple-related news.

Many companies are utilizing biometrics — the statistical analysis of genetic data, from the face, to the eyes, to the finger — to bolster customer security. (RELATED: Beijing Toilets Now Have Face Scanners)
MasterCard announced in April that it’s in the process of testing a credit card with an integrated fingerprint sensor.
“Consumers are increasingly experiencing the convenience and security of biometrics,” said Ajay Bhalla, president of enterprise risk and security at Mastercard, according to an official company press release. “Whether unlocking a smartphone or shopping online, the fingerprint is helping to deliver additional convenience and security. It’s not something that can be taken or replicated and will help our cardholders get on with their lives knowing their payments are protected.”
His claim that fingerprint technology cannot be replicated is certainly up for debate.
Hackers in 2013 said they bypassed the Apple iPhone 5s fingerprint reader only two days after the smartphone went on the market. The purported fingerprint technology for the iPhone 8, though, may be more advanced. (RELATED: Feds Raid Home, Demand Fingerprints To Unlock Phones)
Other features that seem to be on display in the pictures (of unconfirmed authenticity) are a vertical dual camera, which can help enable virtual reality capabilities, according to 9to5Mac. The binary camera aspect was introduced on the iPhone 7 Plus, but its layout is horizontal.
