Albuquerque police officer Dominique Perez and retired detective Keith Sandy were charged with murder Monday for the March 2014 shooting death of James Boyd, the Albuquerque Journal reports. The 4-hour standoff involved over 20 officers.

The officers were charged with an “open count” of murder, which means a judge will decide if they face first degree murder, second degree murder or aggravated assault charges, reports the Washington Post. Perez has been on administrative assignment since the incident.

Boyd, a man with a history of schizophrenia and run-ins with the police, was camping in a restricted area when officers arrived to force him to leave.

What happens next was captured on Perez’s helmet camera in a video released by police and reported by KRQE.

The video shows several police officers pointing guns at Boyd as he appears to talk with police a good distance away, Boyd is also holding two knives.

“If you were down at a bar or a bus stop right now, I’d have the right to kill you,” one officer can be heard saying.

Police appear to convince Boyd to surrender. As Boyd picks up his bags and begins to walk toward police, an officer can be heard saying “do it.”

Suddenly, a flash-bang grenade explodes near Boyd. Then the police dog lunges at him, leading Boyd to draw a knife. Boyd does not move toward police, and even appears to turn as if to run away, when at least one officer opens fire, firing several shots and hitting Boyd in the back.

Boyd is lying face down on the ground as officers command him to put down the knives. He can be heard saying, “Please don’t hurt me anymore. I can’t move.” Then, an officer shoots his bean bag gun at Boyd three times.

After that, an officer sics a police dog on Boyd, who doesn’t respond as the dog rips at his leg.
