Police Tase, Shoot Unarmed Man Who Reportedly Had His Hands Up

A fatal shooting has tainted the new year for a Kansas family, and one witness account raises serious questions.

Police shot and killed an unarmed Wichita man after a dispute over the weekend. Police say they shot the “belligerent” man twice when he reached for his waist, KSN reports.

The police thought he had a weapon, but he was unarmed.

Authorities are conducting an ongoing investigation and the officers involved are on paid leave, The Wichita Eagle reports.

“I saw the passenger; it was clearly a younger man in his early 20s of Hispanic descent, and he was wearing a blue jersey and he had his hands up,” Dustin Deckard, a witness who was driving by as the incident unfolded, told the Eagle.

The man had allegedly threatened members of his family with a knife before police arrived. Police say the man was threatening them and refused to comply with orders even when tased. Police say the fatal shots were fired when the man reached for his waist.
