NFL’s New Gun Rules Pit Private Property Against Public Safety

The Minneapolis Police Federation are complaining that they are being barred the use of their firearms while they are off duty at NFL stadiums. They think the policy violates their rights under chapter 624 in the state which allows police officers to carry their sidearm with them anywhere, 24 hours a day.

The President of the Police Federation John Delmonico wrote a letter to the attorney general over the issue. “I’ve asked the Attorney General to render a legal opinion on whether they can do this or not,” Delmonico said. He added, “In today’s world, active shooter cases around the country, schools, churches, malls you know stadiums we’re fully trained we know what to do we know how to do it and having licensed police officers in area like that armed I think can be very beneficial.”

The officers believe that the new NFL policy against guns should not trump state law. What do you think? Is it better that people should be able to exercise their right to self-defense? Or should private property rights trump the state law?
