RIVERSIDE COUNTRY, Ca. – A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was serving court documents Wednesday afternoon when neighbor Jorge Rodríguez’s medium-sized pit bull barked at him. Startled, the deputy pulled out his firearm and shot himself in the leg.

“The officer got scared and unfortunately he pulled his gun and he shot himself,” Rodríguez told KNBC. “He was in pain, man; I feel sorry for the officer.”

Footage shows the animal, a female named “Precious,” cheerfully playing with children in Rodríguez’s yard. Police say they will not be taking any further action against the dog or its owner.

The deputy’s injuries are not life-threatening.
