The President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte said that there will be “no peace” with communist rebels after the deaths of six soldiers and the abduction of three by the New People’s Army (NPA).

“I have lost many soldiers in just 48 hours, I think to continue with the ceasefire does not, or will not, produce anything,” Duterte said.

The ceasefire was imposed unilaterally by both sides, with no rules to follow. Both sides had violated it multiple times.

Duterte made peace with the communist rebels a priority, offering top leftists cabinet positions and promised, if peace talks succeeded, that Communist Party of the Philippines figurehead Jose Maria Sison would be given a portfolio. Sison is currently living in the Netherlands and is listed by the United States as a “person who supports terrorism.” The Philippine government last week asked Washington to remove him from the list.

“I’m really very sorry. I tried my best but like in the song, my best was not good enough,” Duterte said. “There will be no peace in this land vis-à-vis the Communist Party. Let’s resume the war.”

Duterte also said that the NPA’s demand for the release of hundreds of political prisoners was too much, pointing out that he had already released top communist leaders.

“I am sad to report to you that there will be no peace with the communists for the next generation,” he said.

The conflict has killed 40,000 people since it began in 1968.
