Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey (R) is under investigation for an incident at a motel with a teenage boy, reports KFOR4.
According to the report, Shortey, 35, was said to have been found by police in a Super 8 motel with a boy described by Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn as being 16 or 17, which is the age of consent in Oklahoma.
KFOR4 explained that a series of text messages are what led the boys parents to call the authorities.
Text messages which police now told KFOR4 they are scouring for evidence of criminality.
Police reportedly responded to a welfare check at the Super 8 motel, where they found Shortey with the boy.
A worker at the Super 8 confirmed that “a” Ralph Shorty checked in on March 8th according to their records, says KFOR4.
The Republican out of Oklahoma City is married with kids, explained KFOR.
KFOR4 highlights that it is important to note that Senator has not been arrested or charged with a crime, rather that this is an investigation into the situation. This, however, has not stopped Democrats in the state from calling for the senator to suspend himself from activities in the senate until the investigation is complete.
“The legislature doesn’t need to be focusing on how to deal with or cover up an incident, another incident, like this right now. They need to be working on the business of the people,” Oklahoma Democratic Party Executive Director Sarah Baker told KFOR4.
“The Oklahoma Republican Party takes all accusations against elected officials seriously, especially when the welfare of a minor is involved. We have reached out to Senator Shortey for comment and have not heard back from him at this time. We await the report from law enforcement on whether charges will be filed,” said Pam Pollard, Chairman Oklahoma Republican Party, KFOR4 reports.
According to KFOR4, Sen. Shortey has not responded to inquires for comment, and DA Mashburn has said that he expects the police reports on his desk by Wednesday.
