President Obama is preparing to enact new gun control measures through executive order, the White House has confirmed. Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed reporters on Monday, noting gun control is a “high priority” and,
“… will continue to be until we start to see more progress on this issue in this town […] I can tell you that they’re not stumped, they’re continuing to review the law that’s on the books and continuing to consult with legal authorities but also others who may have ideas about what steps that can be taken to keep guns out of the hands of criminals“.
The announcement comes as Hillary Clinton unveils part of her own strategy for gun control, including extended background checks on gun sales and holding manufacturers “accountable for negligence”. Clinton also hinted she would utilize executive action if elected to the presidency. Speaking to a group of students at Florida’s Broward College, Clinton said, “we took them on in the 90’s. We’re gonna take them on again. And I need your help to do that”.
The latest push to introduce gun control comes after nine people were shot and killed at Umpqua Community College in Oregon last week. Proponents say new measures will prevent criminals and the mentally ill from obtaining guns, while critics blast the move as a violation of the Second Amendment.
Earnest also blamed the National Rifle Association for repeatedly blocking Congress’s attempts to take action on the “gun show loophole” that allows criminals to purchase weapons in the first place.
