A New York Democrat honored the Notorious B.I.G. on the House floor Thursday, remembering the popular rapper also known as Biggie Smalls on the 20th anniversary of his mysterious murder.

Standing in front of a poster-size image of the rapper, whose real name was Chris Wallace, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries recited part of his hit song “Juicy” and lauded him as the “King of New York.” Wallace was fatally shot in a drive-by in Los Angeles in 1997, when he was 24 years old, in what is still one of the city’s biggest unsolved homicides.

“He died 20 years ago today in a tragedy that occurred in Los Angeles, but his words live on forever,” Jeffries said on the House floor. The congressman represents the Brooklyn district where Biggie grew up.

“We know he went from negative to positive and emerged as one of the world’s most important hip hop stars,” he added, again referencing the hit song. “His rags to riches life story is the classic embodiment of the American dream. Biggie Smalls is gone but will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Notorious B.I.G.”
