The men are seeking over $1.1 million in wages that they believe they are owed for work over a six-year period. An employment tribunal is being convened to hear the case and determine whether there was some form of sexist discrimination against them.

The Northern Irish solicitor who is acting for them said, “The vast majority of equal pay cases involve women claiming that they have been underpaid in comparison to male colleagues.”

The men’s claim is centered around a contract change that lowered employees work hours from 45 hours to 37. The men claim that university officials stated that they would be able to receive 8 hours of extra overtime, but when the new contracts arrived, the men found they were on a lower hourly rate of pay than women workers at the same level.

The University’s representative asked defendant Robert Cooze, “Are you seriously asking us to believe that you were discriminated against because you are men?”

Mr Cooze replied “Yes I am”.

A case presenter for the men, Caroline Musgrave stated: “These men say: “We are 18 men and we have been paid differently to all of the women in grade three. All those women are receiving a different rate of pay than us.”

The case is still currently being litigated.
