Man Poised To Run The Czech Republic: ‘We Don’t Want The Euro Here’

The man likely to become the next prime minister of the Czech Republic doesn’t like the idea of converting the country’s currency to the Euro.

Andrej Babis, successful businessman and head of the ANO party, does not want to make the change, which would mean some surrender of national sovereignty to the European Union, Bloomberg reports. He’s likely to win the Czech general election in October.

The ANO party is the Czech word for ‘yes’ as well as originally an acronym for the Action of Dissatisfied Citizens, formed in 2011.

“Everybody knows it’s bankrupt,” Babis told Bloomberg. “It’s about our sovereignty. I want the Czech koruna and an independent central bank.”

“I don’t want another issue that Brussels would be meddling with,” he said, referring to the EU’s pressure for the Czech Republic to take in more refugees, evidenced by the European Commission filing a lawsuit against Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic over the matter in June.

“If there will be more Muslims than Belgians in Brussels, that’s their problem,” he said. “I don’t want that here. They won’t be telling us who should live here.”

The Czech Republic’s refusal to comply to the migration policy of the EU demonstrates their devotion to national sovereignty.

“The biggest added value of the European Union is the national identity of each country,” Babis told Bloomberg. “A strong Europe thanks to strong states — that’s logical, no?”
