French President Emmanuel Macron believes the West “has been cracking since the American election,” as he attempts to find common ground with U.S. President Donald Trump in Paris.

Trump will join Macron for the Bastille Day parade in Paris after holding discussions on terrorism and defense policy. Macron believes Europe’s role has become more essential in the world as Trump “expresses doubt” about multilateralism. (RELATED: Trump Plans To Fly To France To Celebrate Bastille Day With Macron)

“The United States expresses doubts about multilateralism, the U.N., the WTO and the climate,” Macron said in a Thursday interview with daily newspaper Ouest France. “The world order of 1945, recomposed after the fall of the Berlin Wall, is now in crisis … In this context, Europe is an absolute necessity.”

Macron has openly criticized Trump for his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, saying he will continue to work to “make the planet great again.”

He will work to convince American communities and companies to follow the agreement “whether the government wants to or not.” (RELATED: French Protesters Plan ‘No Trump Zone’ Ahead Of President’s Visit)

“I will do everything to convince the cities, the states, American entrepreneurs to follow us,” Macron told Ouest France. “Americans will be a part of the Paris agreement, whether the government wants to or not.”
