Amid the ongoing turmoil inside of Venezuela, the anti-government protesters have apparently set the childhood home of former President Hugo Chavez ablaze, according to DC McClatchy.

Pedro Luis Castillo, a legislator representing Barinas, the city where the late Chavez grew up, explained that protesters lit the Chavez house aflame Monday afternoon along with several government buildings, including the regional office of the National Electoral Council. The acts were, according to DC McClatchy, in protest of the nation’s oppressive socialist regime which currently headed by President Nicolas Maduro. Under Maduro’s leadership the once oil-rich nation has seen triple-digit inflation, rising crime and shortages of food and medicine.

Alongside the Chavez’s home demonstrators have also destroyed at least five statues commemorating Chavez, who was the mentor of Maduro and the founder of Venezuela’s “Bolivarian revolution,” said DC McClatchy.

“It is pretty symbolic that the citizens are venting their frustrations on the author of the Bolivarian revolution,” said Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Council of the Americas, reports DC McClatchy.

Chavez, who died in 2013, used to be widely popular with poor and working class Venezuelans for his left-wing populism and constant denunciations of “Yankee imperialism,” the Daily Caller News Foundation explained.

Current President Maduro has tried to paint a different mask on the counter movement in his country. He has said that he believes “Nazi-fascist” elements are taking root inside the opposition’s ranks and are responsible for the increase tension and conflict between the anti-government forces and his own, explained DC McClatchy.

“In Venezuela there’s rising a counterrevolution of Nazi-fascist influence that that has infected the emotions and thinking of thousands of compatriots, who believe they have the right to pursue others for the simple crime of being Venezuelan or Chavista or revolutionary,” Maduro said in his weekly TV program. “This is terrorism.”

The opposition leadership, who have often called for restraint from their followers, argue that it is the security forces and pro-government militias who are behind the uptick in violence, reports DC McClatchy.
