Greenwald: New York Times ‘helped to kill journalism’ (VIDEO)

Adversarial Journalism

NEW YORK, NY – Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald is quitting his current job in order to start a new venture that he thinks will help change journalism for the better. He chastised outlets such as the New York Times for ‘helping to kill journalism as a potent force for checking power’. The outspoken journalist is famous for revealing leaks provided to him by NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Greenwald wants to start a new media outlet that is adversarial, and speaks truth to power. In this interview with Democracy Now, he explains how the investment coming to his new company won’t stop him from engaging in such journalism. His current outlet, The Guardian suffered from crackdowns by the British government due to his reporting. Because of this and other reasons, he believes he’ll do better on his own.

Greenwald leaves the Guardian this week and starts his project with Peter Omidyar the founder of Ebay, Jeremy Scahill, and Laura Poitris.
