Google Signs Deal To Place Sensors On Contact Lenses

Novartis and Google signed a deal today to develop a new smart contact lens that would place hi-tech sensors on contact lenses.

The lenses would analyze a person’s tears in order to provide measurements on blood glucose levels. These are then sent wirelessly to a mobile device in order to provide accurate information to those suffering from diabetes. The microchip is so tiny that it looks like it’s nothing more than a tiny piece of glitter and the antenna would be thinner than a human hair.

Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin said that he was “very excited to work with Novartis [on using] the latest technology in the miniaturization of electronics to help improve the quality of life for millions of people.”

Novartis also reported that future applications of the technology could help to “restore the eye’s natural autofocus.” No word on whether or not applications could include heads-up displays for “Google Glass-like” features.

Analysts are rating Novartis stock as a definite, “buy.”
