Gary Johnson Taps Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld as Running Mate

William Weld

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson has unveiled his preference for a running mate on the Libertarian Party ticket. William Weld, the former two-term governor of Massachusetts, will seek to become the party’s vice presidential nomination at the national convention in Orlando, Florida.

“We got together and shook hands on it,” Johnson told the Associated Press. “It brings an enormous amount of credibility to what it is I’m doing. I’m unbelievably flattered by this and humbled.”

Johnson met with Weld privately in Las Vegas to discuss a potential run.

“He could be a huge influence when it comes to fundraising. Huge,” said Johnson. “That was something that he in fact volunteered — that he enjoys doing it.”

Weld previously endorsed John Kasich for the 2016 Republican nomination. He was a fundraiser for Mitt Romney and one of Massachusetts’

more popular governors. He has previously run for governor of New York under both Republican and Libertarian banners.

Weld joins VP candidates such as Will Coley, Larry Sharpe, Judd Weiss, and Alicia Dearne.

It’s important to note, while Johnson and McAfee have expressed their preferences, the delegates at the convention will pick the vice presidential nominee.
