GM announced yesterday the recall of 1.3 million additional vehicles, bringing the total number of cars recalled to 2.6 million. In addition to faulty power steering, consumers reported failing ignition switches, which can cause vehicles to stall as well as prevent airbags from deploying. The flaws were reportedly known about since 2001 and were never addressed until recently.

House investigators on Sunday released a memo which showed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which was charged with regulating the safety of the vehicles, failed to open formal investigations into the ignition switch issues. GM also reportedly continued approving car designs with the faulty switch, despite knowing the issues that were present.
