The Egypt Air flight that disappeared and crashed Thursday was “almost certainly” caused by a terror attack.
The flight from Paris to Cairo fell off the radar moments before it was due to land in the Egyptian capital. The cause of the disappearance has yet to be determined, but officials say it was likely due to an attack. The plane carried 66 passengers and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea 130 miles off the coast of Egypt.
Sherif Fathy, Egypt’s civil aviation chief, said a terrorist attack was more likely than a technical failure.
“If you analyze the situation properly the possibility of having a terror attack is higher than the possibility of having a technical [problem],” Fathy said at a press conference. Greek sources told The Guardian the possibility of a suicide bomber or explosives being behind the crash “is very real.”
Jean-Paul Troadec, former chief of France’s air accident investigation unit, the BEA, said the circumstances around the disappearance was “almost certainly” caused by “an attack.”
