Dr. Ben Carson appeared on ABC News this weekend to declare that he will announce his intentions to on whether to run for president by May 1st of 2015. Dr. Carson is a retired pediatric neurosurgeon who rocketed to fame when he bravely chastised President Obama at a prayer breakfast, stating that the “politically correct police are out in full force at all times.”

Carson has become a major figure in the conservative movement since that event. He has since become a contributor for Fox News, offering his opinion on the major issues of the day. He’s seen as a moderate conservative, taking some controversial positions on red meat issues that has rankled the hardcore base of the GOP. Despite differences between radical Republicans and libertarian doctrinaires, Carson is seen as a leading contender for the GOP nomination if he does decide to run, as he is almost universally respected due to his background as a brain surgeon for children.

Libertarians will give pause before considering Dr. Carson as their candidate, with a potential Rand Paul running. Carson has expressed reservations about unrestricted access to firearms and said that he fears that the popular ballot issues across the country legalizing marijuana is a sign of a “descent into hedonism.

Still, Carson would likely be a very strong contender for the nomination, given that he is extremely well known, well respected, and offers the GOP something that they sorely lack… diversity.
