DHS Considering Revival Of Terrorism Alert System

The Department of Homeland Security is considering reviving the nation’s terrorism alert system in wake of the murders of five military service men in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The shootings, carried out by homegrown Muslim extremist Mohammod Abdulazeez, served as the inspiration to launch a review into the system, formally known as National Terrorism Alert System (NTAS). The NTAS replaced the former, oft-derided colour coded alerts after 9/11, but has never been used.

“I’ve asked our folks to consider whether we should revise that system to accommodate how the terrorism threat has evolved,” DHS secretary Jeh Johnson told a group of people at the annual meeting of the Association of the U.S. Army. “The global terrorist threat has evolved from terrorist-directed to terrorist-inspired attacks.”

The NTAS, unlike its predecessor, has only two levels of alert: elevated threat, which indicates a credible threat of terrorism against the United States, and “imminent threat,” which serves as a warning to the general public of “a credible, specific, and impending terrorist threat against the United States.”

According to the website, the NTAS also,

… provides information to the public about the threat, including, if available, the geographic region, mode of transportation, or critical infrastructure potentially affected by the threat; protective actions being taken by authorities, and steps that individuals and communities can take to protect themselves and their families, and help prevent, mitigate or respond to the threat.

The review comes as officials expect further “lone wolf” style attacks on U.S. soil and is the latest in new security measures designed to address and prevent additional terror attacks from occurring.
