Top 5 Crucial Issues That Won’t Be Discussed in Tonight’s Debate

by Kitty Testa

The day has finally arrived—the Super Bowl of American politics—the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This spectacle of political theater will cover the issues that have been hyped for the past year, but the candidates’ positions on everything from ISIS to minimum wage have been well-covered. This is more of a celebrity death-match to see who can one-up the other, and most viewers are looking for a train wreck of gotchas. Will Hillary clear her throat? Will the Donald propose something crazy like killing terrorists’ families? No, this is not likely to be an example of sophisticated political discourse, but it should be quite a show.

In the meantime, our country has problems that neither Clinton nor Trump really wants to talk about, but they’re real. So while the party nominees yammer on about how great and qualified they are, I will not hold my breath waiting to hear them address these crucial issues.

1. Wrongful ConvictionsMAM

Politicians don’t speak of it much, but our criminal justice system is a mess. In the past 20 years, over 2,000 people who were tried and convicted of serious crimes have been exonerated. The average time spent in prison for those who have been exonerated is more than nine years.

A study done several years ago by Ohio State University estimated that every year about 10,000 people in the U.S. are wrongfully convicted of serious crimes. Of course those who have been exonerated are only a fraction of those who are wrongfully convicted. Very few are able to fight successfully through the legal system to achieve legal exoneration. Many people are convicted for lesser crimes as well, and those convictions affect their lives perpetually.

The Netflix series Making a Murderer introduced the issue of wrongful convictions to the public before primary voting began, but candidates didn’t bite. Bear in mind that local party leaders are often prosecutors and judges and their support is valuable to presidential candidates. So don’t ever expect any of them to be critical of the justice system.
