Cops Can Now Arm Drones in North Dakota (VIDEO)

Thanks to police and drone industry lobbyists North Dakota cops can now arm their drones with “less than lethal” weapons like tasers, rubber bullets, and tear gas.

Although the original sponsors of the bill tried to ban all weaponry on police drones, Bruce Burkett of the North Dakota Peace Officer’s Association helped amend the bill to only include a ban on lethal weapons. Of course, despite their classification as “less than lethal” weapons, rubber bullets, tasers, and tear gas have taken numerous lives, particularly when improperly used.

The bill was originally supposed to ban all weapons on police drones and require cops obtain a warrant before using drones.

Grand Forks County sheriff Bob Rost told the Daily Beast that the bill is ridiculous because he needs to spy on people using drones in order to obtain warrants in the first place.

Representatives of the drone industry also opposed the bill because limiting police use of drones limits their economic “development.”

Giving cops armed drones is a terrible idea. Time and time again cops on the scene with good situational awareness still manage to abuse their so-called “less than lethal” options. Putting aside the fact that “less than lethal” weapons are not non-lethal, making those weapons remote controllable from great distances isn’t going to curb police abuse, it’s going to enable it.
