The U.S. government recently declassified video of roughly 60 Cold War-era nuclear weapons tests.
The U.S. detonated more than 1,000 nuclear weapons in tests to build up its arsenal during the Cold War arms race. Videos of these tests were published on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s official YouTube channel.
In the beginning, many of the tests were detonated on remote ocean atolls, but as technology advanced the U.S. started detonating the devices in the upper atmosphere. The government made thousands of films of these blasts between 1945 and 1962, then locked them away in high-security vaults.
