Can Free Market Economics Fix Detroit? (VIDEO)

Detroit Today is the Dream of Progressivism

Harry Veyser is an economist at the University of Detroit Mercy. He believes that Detroit worked best when it was bottom up. Veyser talks about how Detroit used to have the highest standard of living in the world. There was no income tax, no inheritance tax and all the money that was made went back into the community. Now, it’s almost impossible to succeed on your own there.

The city now has the highest taxes in the state and the zones the government created made crime pockets all over the area. With the increase of taxes and crime, people moved out.

Unions, the central government and the federal government all thought that central planning would help the city grow. But it didn’t quite pan out that way, as we see today. In the video from Reason TV below, Dr. Veyser gives his prescription for restoring growth to the once-glorious motor city.

“It’s not going to come back from government planning. It’s going to come when they get out of the way.”
