During a rare  interview on NBC’s “Today Show,”  former President George W. Bush called the media “indispensable to democracy,” and that “we need an independent media to hold people like me to account.”

Bush, speaking to NBC’s Matt Lauer, explained that “power can be ” very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.”

The two went on to discuss the relationship of the media and President Donald Trump, given that Trump has vociferously gone after the media calling them “enemies of America.” In response, Bush explained that during his eight years in office, he had spent a lot of time during his two terms trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to embrace an independent press.

“It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves,” he said.
