Blue Whale Could Explode Near Town, Threaten Local Population (GRAPHIC, VIDEO)

A Whale of a Tale

TROUT RIVER, NEWFOUNDLAND – A 60-Ton carcass of a blue whale could explode after beaching itself and dying this week. Townspeople from Trout River fear the damage that could be caused by the 26-meter animal beached itself right next to a pedestrian boardwalk. The gasses caused by the rotting beast are building up and scientists and locals are working on solutions to alleviate the potential problem.

“At some point, the skin of the animal will lose some of its integrity as all of the connective tissue starts to break down,” Lawson said. “Eventually, that gas will seep out. … It will just deflate like an old balloon,” said Jack Lawson, a research scientist at the Canadian Fishery Department.

The government of Canada is warning citizens to stay away from the carcass. “The risk will come from somebody with a sharp blade who decides they want to cut a hole in the side to see what happens, or if someone is foolish enough to walk on it,” Lawson said. Scientists believe that the animal could carry viruses or diseases that could harm the local townspeople.

A similar incident occurred in the Faroe Islands when a sperm whale was cut open in order to release the built up methane gasses from decomposition. The video shows a scientist using a large knife to cut it open before it suddenly explodes internal organs everywhere with incredible pressure.

“With this animal (in Newfoundland), it’s highly unlikely that it’s going to happen, especially spontaneously,” Lawson said.

This is definitely an interesting problem for a town to have. Without government, who would explode the whales? Enjoy the mayhem below.
