Benghazi is Bigger than Hillary: The Politics of Bloody and Reckless Statecraft

The State Department has only now just released 1,300 emails of Ambassador Chris Stevens who was infamously killed by organized terrorist militias–and not a bunch of protesters angered by a video–in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012.

Keep that date in mind. September 11, 2012; 11 years after the World Trade Center Towers were struck and fell in a fiery collapse filling the streets of New York City with soot and debris, Islamists inspired by Bin Laden’s carnage and ideology murdered 4 Americans due to the bloody foolishness of policy makers in Washington D.C.

Why was the United States in Libya in the first place? Had the United States been attacked by Libya? Did the President have Congressional authorization to make war in a country that did not threaten the United States? What was Ambassador Stevens doing in Libya exactly? Why was he left so vulnerable to attack? What happened in the months leading up to the attack? What happened during the attack? What happened after the attack?

These are the questions being asked by Trey Gowdy’s Benghazi select committee. And though Benghazi has been reviewed several times, the fact that we, the American people and our representatives, are only now seeing 1,300 emails from the very Ambassador who was killed is a testament to the importance of Mr. Gowdy’s committee and an indictment of the a tyrannical, self-important executive branch.

What was some of the content of the Ambassador’s emails?

As Fox News reports:

Two months before the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, then-Ambassador Chris Stevens requested 13 security personnel to help him safely travel around Libya, according to a cable reviewed by Fox News — but he was turned down.

In the July 9, 2012 cable, Stevens reported that, “Overall security conditions continue to be unpredictable, with large numbers of armed groups and individuals not under control of the central government, and frequent clashes in Tripoli and other major population centers.” The cable said 13 security personnel would be the “minimum” needed for “transportation security and incident response capability.”

But a congressional source said Patrick Kennedy, a deputy to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, turned down the request.

The cable sent under Stevens’ electronic signature shows that he was advocating for additional security and warning that the set-up did not meet State Department standards, as conditions deteriorated in the run-up to the attack that killed Stevens and three other Americans.

You see, for several months now, the committee investigating the Benghazi attack on September 11, 2012 has been presented as a political witch hunt meant to harm Hillary Clinton because of the focus on her emails and private server. But Clinton’s emails make up very little of the full body of evidence being reviewed by Mr. Gowdy and his team.

In other words, Hillary, this isn’t solely about you. Don’t flatter yourself. Don’t you dare say this is simply politics as usual. But maybe it is politics as usual: where everyday people get killed and political leaders such as yourself shirk any responsibility for your actions.

This is only has to do with you, Hillary, to the extent that your Libyan policy was an unmitigated disaster and not an example of using “smart power.” When you said  through a shrivel inducing cackle, “We came, we saw, he died,” you may have been talking of Gaddafi, but you were also foreshadowing the deaths of Americans as well as many Libyans your “humanitarian” intervention was ostensibly meant to help. You Hillary Clinton, you Susan Rice, you Samantha Power, you Barack Obama, you are all humanitarians with the guillotine. Libya was your “war of choice.”

And as Robert Gates has recently said, the policy in Libya was a matter of “playing it by ear.” Even if true, it appears the State Department failed to keep its ear to the ground about the ongoing situation in a country smashed to pieces by their war.

Watch Trey Gowdy break down the new revelations from Ambassador Stevens’ emails as well as defend against charges that his committee is engaging in a political witch hunt against Clinton from this past Sunday:

Hillary Clinton is scheduled to appear before the Benghazi committee on Thursday. She should drop the act that this is all about politics and thus isn’t an important matter. Hillary, this is about politics, but it’s bigger than your own Presidential ambitions.

This is about the politics of war, the politics of an Imperial Presidency, the politics of an irresponsible and bloody Statecraft that makes Americans less safe and strips them of their freedoms: in particular, the freedom to know the truth about what their government is doing in their name when it perpetuates war abroad for the sake of peace.
