Baltimore Riots Inspire Protests in New York

By R. Brownell

Days following the riots and destruction in Baltimore as a result of death of Baltimore teen and known criminal, Freddie Grey, hundreds gathered in New York City to protest police abuse, an issue that African-Americans feel put them at a disadvantage, compared to white Americans. The protest based in Times Square was organized by a black-power organization called Millions March NYC, who was successful in pulling together approximately 3,500 people (according to their numbers).

A recent statement from  a spokesperson from Millions March NYC given to the Huffington Post stated:

“While much attention has been given to the protests and rallies in Baltimore over the last few days, less time has been spent talking about the egregious cause of this community’s justified anger….Their protests join a national movement for black life in the face of police murders across the country.”

Protests in NYC and Baltimore are expected to die down over the next several days while the results of the official investigation into the death of Grey are still pending.
