Another Major Paper Reverses CENTURY-Old Trend, Endorses Hillary

The Cincinnatti Enquirer endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Friday, making her the first Democrat to receive the paper’s endorsement since Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

“It has to be Hillary Clinton,” the headline from the editorial board reads.

“Our country needs calm, thoughtful leadership to deal with the challenges we face at home and abroad,” the board writes, acknowledging its century-old trend of endorsing Republicans. “We need a leader who will bring out the best in all Americans, not the worst.”

Citing Clinton’s “proven track record” and relatively “measured” approach to foreign policy in comparison to Trump, the board writes it cannot endorse Trump: “Trump is a clear and present danger to our country. He has no history of governance that should engender any confidence from voters.”

The Enquirer follows in the footsteps of The Dallas Morning News, which also broke a decades-long streak of endorsing Republicans to back Clinton in 2016. That endorsement infuriated many of its readers, and Dallas Morning News editor acknowledged the paper “paid a price” in the form of dropped subscriptions. In an apparent scramble to deal with the fallout, the paper has extended a promotional discount to people who re-subscribe.

In the few hundred comments already posted on the Ohio paper’s endorsement online, people are already vowing to unsubscribe from the paper, although it’s of course unclear how many will follow through.

“Do you hear that sound?” one commenter wrote. “It’s the sound of the last few hundred Enquirer subscribers quickly clicking to cancel their subscriptions over this unnecessary, and way too early endorsement.”

“Unbelievable … you will never get another dime from me,” another wrote. “Your opinion only proves your own ignorance and disregard for your own readers.”
