Cop to Homeowner: “I unloaded on your dog”

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD – A one-year “veteran” of the Anne Arundel County police approached a house this weekend and was greeted by a neighbor’s Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Vern.

The officer shot the dog twice.

According to the dog’s family, the officer was on his way to interview one of the family’s neighbors about a burglary when the dog ran towards the officer and barked.  The officer later claimed that the dog was going to attack him, stating that this was the reason he “unloaded” on the family’s dog.

Acknowledging the trauma of having their dog senselessly gunned down in their front yard, Anne Arundel County Police Chief Kevin Davis met with the family.  In a statement, the chief said, “My deepest condolences go out to the family of Vern during this extremely difficult time,” and announced that there will be a full investigation into the shooting.

The officer was reassigned to administrative duty.
