Here’s The One Thing You Missed While You Were Distracted by “Aleppo”

Johnson, Aleppo

by Eli Bowman

You’ve been duped again.

“What is Aleppo?”

While the literal answer to that question was clarified moments after it was asked, another answer to that question would be: a distraction.

Okay, so the man didn’t know what Aleppo was, but did you know what Aleppo was before yesterday? Most people didn’t. Can you remember anything that Gary Johnson said during that interview other than that ridiculous Facebook trending question “What is Aleppo?”

While you and the rest of the media community were so busy freaking out about how a non-interventionist didn’t know what a non-capital city thousands of miles away was, you missed something that Gary Johnson said that was quite important…a game changer really. Something that directly concerns Aleppo.

In case you only heard the one soundbite previously mentioned, the very first question posed to Johnson on MSNBC’s Morning Joe program was what makes him different than Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Gary Johnson’s response was so spot-on, yet no one is talking about the stark contrast between Johnson’s non-violent approach to the Middle East and the heavy-handed, war-mongers that the Republicans and Democrats have nominated for their presidential candidates.

Isn’t radical foreign policy change in the hottest hotbed of ideological warfare and violence in the world a talking point that’s worthy of trending status on social media? Apparently not to the masses.

How could we miss this? How is it that the Libertarian Party nominee’s blanking on Aleppo took command of all of our attention versus a refreshing foreign policy improvement that means the preservation of tens of thousands of lives? If Johnson’s foreign policy were adopted just a few years ago, it’s possible that the formation of ISIS could have been prevented altogether. If Gary Johnson’s foreign policies were adopted a few years ago Russia wouldn’t be so keen on gaining leverage in the vulnerable Middle East. If Gary Johnson’s foreign policies were adopted a few years ago, absolutely none of us would know what or where in the world Aleppo was! That would have been a good thing.

Now that we finally do know what Aleppo is (thanks Gary), wouldn’t it be nice if it was just a quiet town in Syria again and not the epicenter of the refugee crisis riddled with killings and bombings? Well it could have been if Johnson were elected President back in 2012.

Look, if you want to keep harping on about how Gary Johnson didn’t know what Aleppo was, then that’s your prerogative, but in the meantime please pardon the serious students of government while we move on to things that actually make a difference in the nation and in the world.
